comments
A 1981 version of this collage was oriented upside down from its current
presentation and contained a yellow
ground. That version was consigned
to Knoedler & Company in 1983 and
returned to the artist in November
1985. Motherwell then rotated the work
180 degrees, repainted the ground red,
and modified the central area by adding
collage elements, including a fragment
from his 1984 print Flesh Automatism
(Engberg and Banach 2003, no. 346).

comments
This collage includes a fragment from a
1984 print, Mexican Night II (Engberg
and Banach 2003, no. 348). In 1986
Motherwell used this work as a model
for a painting, The Big A (p1136).
The sheet music is from Mozart’s
“Mi lagnerò tacendo” (I Complain in
Silence; k. 437), with the lyrics here
translated into German.
