This collage includes part of a package
(postmarked July 13, 1961) sent from
La Belle Jardinière, a department store
in Paris, to Motherwell’s friend, the
artist Robert Osborn (1904–1994),
whom he first met in Taxco, Mexico, in
1941. Motherwell wrote the introductory essay for a catalogue of Osborn’s
references
Mathew 1986, p. 1.

This collage includes a fragment of a
1984 print, Mexican Night II (Engberg
and Banach 2003, no. 348), and a
fragment of a proof for a 1985 print,
Burning Sun (Engberg and Banach
2003, no. 357), printed on a white
ground. The sheet music is from the
score of an unidentified Stabat Mater
that Motherwell used in a number
of other collages (see the Comments
for c687).
