This collage was begun in 1984 and
revised into the version reproduced
here after it was returned from consignment at Knoedler & Company early in
1985. Its title is taken from a 1960
poem of the same name by Robert
Duncan.
Our reproduction of this work has
been cropped from a 1985 studio slide.
We do not know whether this work still
exists in the form illustrated here.

The collage element in this work is a
mailing envelope with a drawing by
Motherwell on it. We have classified this
work as a collage rather than a drawing
because of the way it is signed on the
support sheet and not the pasted element, which indicates that Motherwell
intended the pasted element to be part
of the larger composition.

This collage incorporates a fragment of
a 1979 lithograph and screen print, St.
Michael III (Engberg and Banach 2003,
no. 237). Motherwell added the blue
and yellow areas of paint that surround
the collage elements after the work was
photographed in June 1985 (Sloman
photo no. 1326). It was consigned to
Knoedler & Company in October 1986.
