comments
This collage was originally titled Form
Cut into Time, but Motherwell retitled it
in 1990 when he sent it to his solo exhibition at Artcurial in Paris. This work
would later serve as the model for both
a 1988 painting on paper, Study for
Mask (for Ingmar Bergman) (w714), and
a 1989 lithograph, Mask (for Ingmar
Bergman) (Engberg and Banach 2003,
no. 474).
The sheet music is from Mozart’s
“Mi lagnerò tacendo” (k. 437), from an
edition with the lyrics translated into
German.
