comments
This work is rendered mostly in paint;
the only collage element is the piece
of wood veneer at the lower left.
Motherwell wrote that this collage was
“made in East Hampton, Long Island,
one winter, there is some sand in it
and the colors have to do with the
sand and sea in winter” (letter from
Motherwell cited in Fogg Art Museum
exh. cat. 1957, p. 239). The Samuel M.
Kootz Gallery first exhibited the work
in January 1946 as Abstraction with
Scallops, but by the time the Museum
of Modern Art acquired it and exhibited it in their Recent Acquisitions show
the following month, Motherwell had
renamed it In Beige with Sand.
