This collage was created as a maquette
for New York Portfolio: Untitled (Engberg
and Banach 2003, no. 293), part of a
print portfolio commissioned by the
New York Graphic Society. As part of
the commission, Motherwell was
required to include photographs of
cultural institutions in it. This collage
is one of the rare works in which
Motherwell included photographic
imagery.

comments
This work was begun in 1976, when it
was titled Gauloises Longues and contained an enlarged cigarette package.
It was reproduced with that title on the
back cover of the April 1978 issue of
Artforum, in an advertisement for the
Ace Gallery. In January 1983 Motherwell
reworked the composition, covering the
blue Gauloises cigarette packages with
white paint and adding the “Je t’aime”
in charcoal. The work was then retitled
Je t’aime with Gauloises Blue.

The title of this collage refers to
Australia II, the Australian boat that
won the 1983 America’s Cup. The race
was founded in 1857, and the trophy
had remained in the hands of the New
York Yacht Club for the previous 126
years. See the Comments for The
America Cup (c150).
