comments
This collage is signed and dated 1968,
but we do not know what that earliest
version looked like. Motherwell reworked
it in 1982 (per a photograph of the
work in his studio), but preserved the
earlier signature.

comments
This work, composed of two panels
measuring 36 x 18 inches each, is the
only real diptych created by Motherwell.
Its title alludes to Dylan Thomas’s 1940
book Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog.
