This collage is the first of the Gypsy
series; the three other works in the
series are dated 1982 (see c671–c673).
All are on a gray archival cardboard
that Motherwell used only for these
works. In Motherwell’s 1983 livre
d’artiste, El Negro, which he began to
work on in 1981, one of the images is
titled El Negro: Gypsy Curse, after the
line from Rafael Alberti’s poem “Negro
de maldirión gitana irremediable”
(Black of Gypsy Curse Incurable); see
Engberg and Banach 2003, nos. 308.17
and 314.
