comments
This collage was begun in 1977, at the
same time as other works in the
Cathedral series (see the Comments
for c612). It was revised around 1981
when Motherwell revised a number of
works from that series.
Motherwell later used this work as
the basis for a 1991 collage print, Black
for Mozart (Engberg and Banach 2003,
no. 521).
comments
The composition of this collage was set
in 1977, executed entirely in paper, at
the same time as other works in the
Cathedral series (see the Comments for
c612). Motherwell added paint to the
black and red areas in 1981.
A lithograph and poster were based
on this collage: Art 1981 Chicago Print
(Engberg and Banach 2003, no. 282),
commissioned by the Lakeside Group
for the 1981 Chicago International Art
Exposition.
