comments
This collage was begun in 1977, executed entirely in paper, at the same
time as other works in the Cathedral
series (see the Comments for c612).
Around 1981, Motherwell made major
revisions to it, most especially by adding red paint to most of its ground.

comments
This collage was begun in 1977, at
the same time as other works in the
Cathedral series (see the Comments for
c612). In the earliest version of this
collage, the central form was composed
of blue papers. A Polaroid photograph
c663
of the work in Motherwell’s studio
shows that Motherwell painted these
forms black around 1981, when he
revisited several works from the
Cathedral series.
The early version of this collage
served as the basis for the first version
of a large painting, Apse (p984). The
final version of this collage was used as
a maquette for a 1991 lithograph, Black
Cathedral (Engberg and Banach 2003,
no. 522).
