The composition of this collage was
set in 1980, with the arcing form on the
left rendered in black paint. That version was lent to Tyler Graphics Ltd.
in April 1985, and it was eventually
used as the basis for the 1987 collage
print Game of Chance (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 377). Sometime after
the work was returned to Motherwell,
he painted the black form white. That
version was consigned to Knoedler
& Company from May 1987 to April
1988. Motherwell revised the work
again slightly in 1991, when he made
small adjustments in the upper right
corner.

In an early version of this collage,
the broad band on the right side was
painted in ochre (Sloman photo
no. 1238). Motherwell repainted that
section blue before the work was consigned to Knoedler & Company in
May 1987.
