Knoedler & Company in 1983. After it
was returned to his studio in 1985,
Motherwell reworked the collage again,
painted over the date, then re-signed
the work with the original 1980 date.
The title of this collage refers to
the name of the building next to
Motherwell’s “Sea Barn” residence and
studio in Provincetown, which was
known as “The Sign of the Mermaid.”
Beginning in 1972 Motherwell purchased condominium apartments in
that building, which he used as lodgings
for family and friends, and eventually
for a print studio.
The sheet music in this collage is
from Mozart’s Eine kleine deutsche
Kantate (k. 619).
