Motherwell set the composition of
this collage in 1978, and it was first
photographed that December (Sloman
photo no. 766). Sometime after this,
he repainted the triangular area on the
right side of the work from its original
red to the present black. The work was
in its final form by the time it was photographed again in May 1979 (Sloman
photo no. 780). The Long Point Gallery
first exhibited it in 1979 as McCartney
in Brazil, but it was subsequently sold
under the title Brazil. Despite the reference to Paul McCartney, the sheet
music in this collage is from Mozart’s
Sonata movement in G minor, Allegro,
for piano (k. 312).
This work is closely related to the
1977 collage Step Inside Love (c596),
which contains an enlarged lithographic
294
collages
reproduction of a Reynitas Cigarrilhos
package and sheet music by McCartney;
it is also closely related to the collage
Delicados (c598), which was originally
known as McCartney in Mexico.
