An early state of this work can be seen
framed, without the collage element,
in photographs of Motherwell’s studio
comments
Motherwell began work on this collage
in 1976, during the period when he
created St. Michel (c567) and St. Michel
No. 2 (c576). An early version of the
collage, which then contained a black
vertical stripe along the right side and
smaller areas of black in the lower left
corner and next to the lithograph of
the St. Michel cigarette label, was photographed in October 1977 (Sloman
photo no. 673). Sometime after that,
Motherwell painted over most of the
blacks with ochre. The completed collage was consigned to Knoedler &
Company in April 1978.
