Motherwell began his Cathedral collages in Provincetown during the summer of 1977. The central form in these
works is reminiscent of Le Corbusier’s
1956 design for the Notre Dame du
Haut chapel in Ronchamp, France, a
structure that was completed in 1964.
A poster featuring the chapel, made
for the Le Corbusier exhibition held at
the Pavillon de Vendôme in Aix-enProvence from July to August 1967, is
