comments
This work was done in 1977, around
the time that Motherwell gave definitive
form to the first collage called Port de
Boston (c606). Both works contain
printed customs labels for “Produce
of France, Port de Boston,” which is
partly covered over in this work by
another piece of paper.

comments
An October 1977 photograph of an
early version of this collage shows the
basic composition already set but the
lower part of the ground left unpainted
c609
(Sloman photo no. 663). That version
of the collage was shown at the Janie C.
Lee Gallery in 1978, where it remained
on consignment until January 1987.
Sometime after the work was returned
to Motherwell, he extended the red
paint to cover the raw canvas ground at
the lower right, painting over an area of
black gestural marks as he did so.
