comments
Both the title and the compositional
format of this collage refer to
Motherwell’s 1962 Beside the Sea
series. The “Fish and Chips” of the title
refers to the collage element at the center of the composition, which includes a
bag printed with a newspaper motif
overprinted with a red-and-white logo
reading “Hot Fish & Chips.” Similar
bags also appear in other works; see
c601, c620, c622, c639, and c644.

comments
The title of this work is taken from the
label from a bottle of Xylol brand paint
thinner and solvent that is placed at
its center.
