In 1977 Motherwell’s lawyer, Lee
Eastman, helped arrange a commission
for Motherwell by MPL Communications, the musician Paul McCartney’s
280
collages
publishing company. (McCartney was
married to Eastman’s daughter Linda.)
Under the terms of the commission,
Motherwell agreed to make several
collages incorporating McCartney’s
sheet music.
This collage takes its title from the
sheet music it contains, which is for
“Step Inside Love,” a song written by
McCartney and John Lennon. The
collage also includes a lithograph of
an enlarged package from Reynitas
Cigarrilhos, a brand of cigars manufactured in Bahia. This lithographic reproduction of the wrapper was made for
Motherwell by Tyler Graphics Ltd., and
was also used in Brasileira (c527).

This is Motherwell’s second collage
that incorporates music by Paul
McCartney, as part of a commission
by MPL Communications (see the
Comments for c596). The title of this
work comes from the sheet music for
“Magneto and Titanium Man,” a song
by McCartney.
The mailing envelope was sent
to Motherwell by Leslie Waddington,
Motherwell’s British print dealer.
