Although this work was auctioned at
Sotheby Parke Bernet in 1986 as Study
for Pancho Villa Dead and Alive, and
has been exhibited as such since then,
that title was not given by Motherwell.
While this collage has certain features
in common with Pancho Villa, Dead
and Alive (c7), such as the rendering of
the figure and the similar patterned
German wrapping paper, it was created
independently of that work and at a
later date.
