comments
This collage was exhibited in an early
state, under the title Chesterfield, at the
John Berggruen Gallery in 1975, and at
the Janie C. Lee Gallery in May 1976
(Sloman photo no. 45). After the work
was returned to Motherwell in late
1976, he reworked it extensively, adding
collage elements, covering over the lithographed Chesterfield cigarette package, and adding blue and ochre paint to
the composition. The completed work
was consigned to Knoedler & Company
in December 1976 with its current title,
Rue de la Grande Truanderie. The title
refers to the address on the envelope
that is pasted in the upper left part of
the collage, which was sent from Art
Press International, located in the rue de
la Grande Truanderie, Paris.
