The title of this collage probably refers
to Laura Bohannon’s 1966 article
“Shakespeare in the Bush,” first published in Natural History 75 (August–
September 1966): pp. 28–33, which
describes her experience of telling the
story of Hamlet to elders of the Tiv
people in West Africa. The large piece
of gray paper near the center of the
work, which has an Ernte 23 cigarette
wrapper pasted on it, recalls the forms
in Motherwell’s 1965 Africa collages
(see c154–c156).
