The printed collage element in this
work is an enlarged lithographic
reproduction of an Ernte 23 cigarette
264
collages
package. Ernte is the German word
for “harvest,” and inspired the title of
this work.
Motherwell titled another, dissimilar collage Autumn (c414).
Our reproduction comes from an
early color slide of this work.

The sheet music in the upper part of
this collage is a lithographic reproduction of part of the score of Schoenberg’s
Chamber Symphony no. 1 for 15 solo
instruments, op. 9; it is combined
with part of the score for Stravinsky’s
Le sacre du printemps, which is below
it. The title of this collage refers to
Monique Eastman, the wife of Lee
Eastman, Motherwell’s attorney
in the 1970s.
