comments
This work was originally titled Chilean
Collage and was sometimes later referred
to in studio records as Chilean Collage
No. 2, because of its relationship to the
contemporary Elegy for Salvador Allende
(c528), which had originally been titled
Chilean Collage No. 1. (When this second Chilean collage was sent to the
Gertrude Kasle Gallery in 1975, it was
erroneously listed as Chile Collage #2,
and that title was printed on the
announcement for Motherwell’s exhibition there, but the title was subsequently
corrected.) In 1991, while preparing
for his exhibition in Mexico City,
Motherwell revised the title a final time,
emphasizing the political nature of the
collage elements (see the Comments
for c528).
