An early version of this work, titled In
Blue and Beige and dated May 27, 1974,
was exhibited at the Ace Gallery from
July to August 1975 (studio inventory
photo no. ph 57-11). After the work was
returned to Motherwell, he repainted
the ground red, retitled it, and added the
signature and the “May 75” date at
the lower left (Sloman photo no. 339).
The final version was photographed
in November 1975 (Sloman photo
no. 345).
