This work is signed with the date “Feb
75,” but studio photographs reveal that
Motherwell continued to work on it
through the fall of that year; it was photographed in its final state in November
1975. The title refers to the curving
white vertical form, which suggests a
conflation between a swan’s head and
a phallus.

from a book sent to Motherwell by
Wittenborn and Company on February
18, 1975. The publisher and bookseller
George Wittenborn (born in 1905),
whose firm Wittenborn, Schultz, Inc.,
had published the Documents of
Modern Art series from 1944 to 1960
(with Motherwell as the editor until
1952), died on October 15, 1974.
