with the same title (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 192), was created

to commemorate the opening of a new
Stanford Law School building, the
Crown Quadrangle, on September
26–27, 1975.
The color and composition of this
collage have affinities with Matisse’s
paper cutout La Danseuse, ca. 1949
(see fig. 143 in volume 1), which was
owned by Motherwell. The reference to
Matisse was probably a conscious tribute on Motherwell’s part, since he first
saw Matisse’s work at the home of
Michael Stein while he was a student
at Stanford.
