comments
This work was first exhibited in 1975
as Shadows; but two years later, it
was shown as Das Menschen. In 1985
Motherwell consigned it to Knoedler &
Company under its present title, along
with another newly retitled work, Edgar
Allan Poe Series (The House of Usher)
(c464). The phrase “Edgar Allan Poe
Series” is a reference to Motherwell’s
four numbered Poe series collages (see
c402–c405) of 1973, which also were
composed of black-and-white collage
elements on ochre grounds. The sheet
music in this work is from Eine kleine
deutsche Kantate by Mozart (k. 619).

comments
The title of this work may refer to
Sangre y arena (1914), a novel by
Vicente Blasco Ibáñez (1867–1929)
that tells the story of the rise and fall
c512
of a bullfighter in Sevilla. Ibáñez’s novel
inspired two films, both called Blood
and Sand: a 1922 version that starred
Rudolph Valentino, and a 1941 remake
starring Tyrone Power.
