comments
This collage, along with Corsican
Collage (c500) and Bastos (c502), is
among the first works by Motherwell in
which he used a lithographic enlargement of a printed object as a collage
element. The enlargement in this case is
a five-color lithograph made by Tyler
Graphics Ltd. of a package of Bastos
cigarettes, a Corsican brand. The writer
Arthur Cohen had brought the package
used as a model back from Europe as a
gift to Motherwell.
This collage was the maquette
for the 1975 lithograph Bastos, printed
by Tyler Graphics Ltd. (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 169), and can be
dated in relation to Motherwell’s work
on the lithograph, which began in
September 1974 (the edition was
printed in late January 1975).
This collage was consigned to
Knoedler & Company on January 2,
1975. On the consignment form to
Knoedler, it is dated 1974.
