work had a two-toned ground, with a
darker tone in the upper portion.
The sheet music is from a revised
edition of Mozart’s “Des kleinen
Friedrichs Geburtstag” (For the
Birthday of Little Prince Friedrich;
k. 529), in which Daniel Jäger’s poem
“Arete” was used; the first words of
that poem are visible here.
It is unclear when the sheet music
was added; a photograph of the work in
its final state was taken around 1977.
Our reproduction comes from an
early color photograph of this work.

comments
Motherwell made a number of collages
with the restricted means of blue and
white collage elements on an orange
ground, but several of them were
painted over. Only this work and one
other collage (c481) were given titles
and numbers in what he called the
Blue and White on Orange series.
