Wake VII at the Ace Gallery in July–
August 1975; that version had dark
painted tones over most of the left side
of the work and at the lower right
corner.
Sometime after the collage was
returned from the Ace Gallery in
October 1975, Motherwell repainted
the ground light blue, added a green
rectangular form on the left side of
the picture, and placed a label from
E. Coudray, a French perfumer, at the
center of the green painted area. The
work was then shown at the Janie C.
Lee Gallery in March–April 1978 as
Finnegans Wake VII, with Green, and
it remained on consignment to the
gallery until 1983, when it was lent to
an exhibition in Provincetown. In 1984
Motherwell revised the work again,
adding black over much of the green.

comments
Motherwell began this work in 1974
(studio inventory photo no. ph 61-5).
Both the sheet music—from Mozart’s
“An die Hoffnung” (To Hope; k. 390/
340c)—and the signature and date at
the upper right were added later, sometime between April 1975, when the
work appears in its intermediate state
in a studio photograph, and October
1977, when it was photographed in its
final state (Sloman photo no. 485).
