comments
This work is said to have been “accidentally destroyed” (Arnason 1982,
p. 30). Our reproduction of it comes
from an early black-and-white photograph (Juley photo no. 38; j0004833).
The vertical forms that frame the two
ovals appear to be the exposed paperboard ground on which the work was
constructed. Motherwell would revisit
this kind of image in several later works,
first in an early state of the painting In
Black and Pink with the Number Four
(p353), where it is still visible in the
pentimenti, and again in an untitled
1973 collage (c416).

comments
This collage has been assigned dates
ranging from 1943 to 1946. The earlier
date seems more likely, based on its
style and on the 1943–44 date assigned
to it in early exhibition records. The
word viva also appears in View from a
High Tower (c17) and Viva (c33).
