This work was first exhibited in 1975 at
Knoedler & Company as French Door
II. In 1985 Motherwell consigned the
work to Knoedler a second time and
renamed it Edgar Allan Poe Series (The
House of Usher), without making any
changes to the work itself. The new title
referred to his 1973 works Poe No. 1,
No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 (c402–c405),
which were composed of black-andwhite collage elements on ochre
grounds.
