comments
The collage element at the center of
this work is a customs label from the
city of Rijeka in Croatia (then part of
Yugoslavia). A number of Motherwell’s
works had been shown in Rijeka in
January 1962 as part of a U.S.
Information Agency traveling exhibition, Vanguard American Painting.

The title of this work, done on the eve
of Saint Valentine’s Day, refers to Igor
Stravinsky’s Le sacre du printemps (The
Rite of Spring) of 1913.
