comments
This collage is named for Heidi and
Claus Colsman-Freyberger, who
worked for Motherwell between 1972
and 1976. The mailing label at the
lower left center, from Peter A. Juley &
Son, is addressed to Heidi ColsmanFreyberger. According to her, this
was the first of the many 72 x 36–inch
collages that Motherwell did during
the 1970s.

comments
The title of this collage refers to a torn
piece of a brown paper package with a
mailing label from the photographers
Peter A. Juley & Son addressed to
Motherwell. Another of these packages
is used in The Photographer (c489).
Motherwell set the composition
of this collage in 1974, and an early
version was first photographed in April
1975 (Sloman photo no. 26). Sometime
after that, he added the small area of
black paint near the lower left corner.
