October 20, 1977 (Sloman photo
no. 661). A label from Denis, Henry
Mounie & Co. cognac, which features
an image of a grape leaf, is visible
within a circular hole in the piece of
tan paper.

Motherwell completed the first
version of this work in December 1973,
but it was not photographed until
March 1977 (Sloman photo no. 503).
Sometime before that October,
Motherwell altered the work by tearing
away the edges of the beige paper
collage element, revealing the underlying Upson board support. The work

This work was begun in 1973 and photographed in an early state in January
1974. Motherwell later revised it, adding the blue paint, and studio photos
show that the work was complete by
April 1975 (Sloman photo no. 250).
The title refers to the rectangle of packing cardboard, which has three slots cut
in it, suggesting the letter M.
