comments
The Suchard on Orange series began
with three works in 1971 (see c274–
c276). The title refers to the Suchard
Bittra chocolate wrapper that was used
as a collage element in each work.
Motherwell revisited the series in 1973
and created four new works, marked
by a greater austerity than the 1971
collages.
This work was originally sold to
the Blum-Helman Gallery in 1974 as
Suchard on Orange No. 4, but the Des
Moines Art Center acquired it later
that same year as Orange Suchard Bittra
No. 4, and the work has sometimes
been exhibited under that title. We have
restored the work’s original title to
maintain the integrity of the series.
