comments
The collage elements in this work
include a lithographic reproduction of
sheet music from Stravinsky’s Le sacre
du printemps (The Rite of Spring) and
a Gauloises cigarette package. Arnason
(1977b and 1982) reproduced the
final state of this work with a caption
erroneously indicating that the image
represents the next-to-final state.

comments
This collage takes its title from the
brown wrapping paper and mailing
label torn from a package sent to
Motherwell by Gemini G.E.L. in Los
Angeles. Motherwell worked on several
print editions at Gemini in March
1973. This work shares strong compositional similarities with Birthday (c372),
created earlier that year.
