The label at the center of this collage
is from Pays Basque Irouléguy wine
made by the Cave Coopérative
d’Irouléguy. It is possible that the wine
label dates from Motherwell’s 1958
sojourn in Saint-Jean-de-Luz, France;
this work was sent to the Janie C. Lee
Gallery in 1978 as St.-Jean-de-Luz.
Motherwell had retitled the work Basque
Collage by the time it was sold in 1989.

The brown pasted paper in the upper
left of this work is a torn fragment of an
aquatint, Untitled, 1973 (Engberg and
Banach 2003, no. 138). The Chateau
Latour wine label at the center is a lithographic reproduction similar to those
used in several other collages from this
period (see c389 and c417) and in the
group of Paulliac prints from the 1973
Summer Light series (Engberg and
Banach 2003, nos. 148–51).
