comments
This work is one of five collages
Motherwell created in March 1973
at Gemini G.E.L., Los Angeles, as
maquettes for planned (but unrealized)
editions of lithographs (see the
Comments for c386).
The Ernte 23 cigarette label in this
collage is a lithographic facsimile.

comments
Motherwell began the Guardian
series in 1966 (see the Comments for
Guardian No. 1, c170), but many of the
Guardian collages were later reworked.
This collage was revised in 1973, when
Motherwell added the ochre paint and
the Ernte 23 cigarette package, and
added the later date to the inscription.
