The white paper at the right center of
this work is a fragment of one of the
paintings that Motherwell had done in
1967 on pages torn from the March
1967 issue of the Art Bulletin (see also
w246–w249). The right side of this
work was originally painted red.
Motherwell added the blue paint to
that area in 1990, along with the black
brushstroke on the torn magazine
page; but the basic structure of the
composition remained unchanged.

The title of this work refers to the image
of the Läkerol pastilles package that is
visible beneath the black vertical form.
In March 1973 Motherwell traveled
to Los Angeles to work for a month on
several editions of lithographs at Gemini
G.E.L. (see Engberg and Banach 2003,
nos. 142–52, 162–67). This picture is
one of five collages he made during this
period as maquettes for planned (but
unrealized) editions of lithographs (see
also c387–c390). This and the other
four unique collages he made at the
time utilize some of the same elements
that would be featured in the collaged
lithographs that he created at Gemini.
The image of the Läkerol package is
actually a lithographic facsimile of a
package for the Swedish pastilles, which
was produced by Gemini G.E.L. The
red ground in this work is not painted,
as would be typical in Motherwell’s
collages, but instead printed onto the
paper support.
The prints and collages Motherwell
did at this time marked his first collaboration with Kenneth Tyler, who was
