comments
This is the fifth collage in which
Motherwell used a piece of mailing
wrapper from the French periodical La
Nouvelle Revue française (N.R.F.), and
the fourth in the numbered N.R.F. collage series. The first three collages in
the series were created in the spring of
1960, and were given the numbers 1 to
3 (see c104–c106); the fourth one,
created in 1963–64 (c143), was untitled
and unnumbered. The remaining piece
of the mailing wrapper that Motherwell
used in this collage had been splattered
with blue oil paint.
