The title of this work refers to the piece
of an envelope with a mailing label
from the John Berggruen Gallery in
San Francisco addressed to Motherwell.
The other collage elements are a label
from a bottle of Mumm’s champagne
and a piece of paper that is mostly
painted over. Motherwell made the
Berggruen Collage (c179) in 1967, using
a mailing wrapper for catalogues from

The brightly colored pasted paper at
the lower center of this work is a package from Ernte 23 cigarettes, a German
brand. Ernte in German means “harvest,” hence the title of this work. See
also Harvest 23 with Ultramarine (c364).

his 1961 exhibition at Heinz Berggruen’s
gallery in Paris. In 1973 he began working with the John Berggruen Gallery in
San Francisco, which was run by Heinz
Berggruen’s son—a circumstance to
which the title of this collage alludes.
