at the center. The collage was begun in
1967; the red ground and the vertical
lines were added in 1973.

The title of this work refers to the second movement of Charles Ives’s Piano
Sonata no. 2, Concord, Mass., 1840–
60, which is titled “Hawthorne.” A page
of sheet music from Ives’s sonata is at
the center of the collage, above a label
from a bottle of Mumm’s champagne,
and partially covered by an unidentified
Italian text written in a cursive script.
Motherwell probably added the Italian
text around 1987, when the work was
returned to him from consignment at
the Janie C. Lee Gallery.
