comments
According to the present owner of
this work, it is inscribed on the verso
as number 10 in the Gauloises with
Scarlet series and dated June 27, 1972;
but we do not know whether this inscription is in Motherwell’s hand. In the early
1970s, Motherwell traded this work for
his early painting Descent from the Cross
(see ew.xiii in volume 1), which was then
owned by his first cousin Mary Pengra.
According to a letter from a close relative, “He did not want that figurative
painting out there as part of the official
legacy” (Dedalus Foundation Archives).
