Switzerland, early in 1972. The collage
element at its center is part of a
Gauloises cigarette package.

This collage was the first work in the
Gauloises with Scarlet series, in which
the titles vary somewhat; they are sometimes given as Scarlet with Gauloises,
Gauloises on Scarlet, and so forth.
Subsequent works in the series were
given numbers; see the Comments for
Gauloises with Scarlet No. 1 (c290).
Around October 1982, Motherwell
painted the red ground in a bit closer to
the Gauloises package.
