The title of this collage refers to the
torn mailing envelope from the French
art publication Chroniques de l’art
vivant. Motherwell was featured in the
magazine’s July–August 1971 issue,
which published an interview with him
conducted by Irmeline Lebeer (see
Lebeer 1971).

comments
This collage was created early in 1972 in
St. Gall, Switzerland, where Motherwell
went to sign several editions of prints
he had created there the previous June.
The dedication incised into the paint
at the lower left is to Jürg Janett, then a
co-owner of the Galerie im Erker in
St. Gall.
