comments
The canvas collage element near the
lower right center of this work contains
three vertical lines drawn in charcoal.
Each line has a notation written
under it in the artist’s hand: “Krylon”;
“Krylon + matte medium”; and “matte
medium.” These are notations about
the different Krylon brand fixatives
Motherwell was testing on the charcoal
lines. The blues at the top and bottom
of the composition were added before
November 1989, when the work was
consigned to Knoedler & Company.
Museo Rufino Tamayo, Mexico City,
1991 (traveling), cat. no. 43, color illus.
