comments
This work, dated 1971, anticipates the
collages that Motherwell would develop
in 1972, which contain a Gauloises cigarette package silhouetted against a
monochromatic ground. For more on
this extended series of works, see the
Comments for Gauloises with Scarlet

comments
This is the first numbered work in a
series whose title refers to the blue
Suchard Bittra Swiss chocolate wrapper
near the center of the composition.
The first three numbered works in this
series (see also c275 and c276) are
visible in their early states in Michael
Blackwood’s documentary Robert
Motherwell: Summer of 1971. Numbers 4
to 7 in the series were done in 1973
(c406–c409). The compositional format of the works in this series echoes
both the 1960 collage The French Line
(c124) and the Open series, and anticipates the 1972 German Line collages
(c352–c363).
