This collage was started in 1969,
around the same time that Motherwell
worked on the collage for the Juilliard
School poster (c265). It contains the
same kind of brown paper with an
opening onto the same small piece of
sheet music from Beethoven’s String
Quartet no. 16 in F major, op. 135. It is
also the same atypical size. The paint
in this collage was probably added after
Motherwell began to settle into his
Greenwich studio in the spring of 1970;
it is one of the first works that he completed there. The title refers to an especially pensive poem by Robert Frost,
“Tree at My Window.”
