comments
The title of this work refers to the poet
Stanley Kunitz (1905–2006), to whom
it was given as a birthday present and
to whom it is inscribed on the piece of
white paper at the center; Kunitz’s
birthday was July 29.
comments
An earlier state of this work, reminiscent of the 1968 Beside the Sea
series (w254–w261) and the Study in
Watercolor series (w262–w267), is
visible in the pentimenti. The green
paper collage element has a serrated
edge that suggests it was part of a
paper shopping bag.

comments
The title of this work refers to part of a
Gauloises cigarette carton that is used
as a collage element, set next to a piece
of beige paper with the rectangular
U form typical of the Open series
drawn on it in pencil.
